What is health care allowance?
Health care allowance is money you receive from the government to soften the costs of basic health insurance for people who earn less. Basic health insurance is mandatory and certainly not cheap, which is why the government contributes to people who otherwise have difficulty paying, wonderful isn’t it?
When are you entitled to healthcare allowance?
To apply for to health care allowance, you need a Dutch basic health insurance. You should also not earn too much per year. Read below what your maximum income can be.
In 2021 your income may not exceed € 31,138 per year. Do you have an allowance partner? The joint income may not exceed € 39,979 per year.
On January 1, 2021, your capital may not exceed € 118,479. Do you have an allowance partner? The joint income may not exceed € 149,819.
18 years or older
From the age of 18 and up you have your own health insurance. And then you can apply for health care allowance. You will receive health care allowance from the month, after the month in which you turned 18.
Are you entitled to health care allowance as an au pair?
As an au pair you are entitled to health care allowance if you have a Dutch basic health insurance and your income and assets are not higher than stated above. This is usually low enough for an au pair to qualify for health care allowance.
Exemption from entitlement to health care allowance as an au pair
There is one important exception: if the au pair lives with a single-parent family, the au pair is (usually) not entitled to healthcare allowance. This is because the income and assets of the host parent are included, because in this case the au pair is seen as an allowance partner of the host parent.
How much health care allowance can you receive as an au pair?
How much health care allowance you can receive as an au pair depends on your income. The healthcare allowance for a single person is a maximum of €107 per month. The lower the income, the more allowance the au pair will receive. Is the au pair entitled to less than €24 healthcare allowance per year? In that case, this amount will not be paid out. If it turns out at the end of the year that the au pair was entitled to more, it will still be paid.
