Can I stay in the Netherlands after my au pair year?

We get a lot of questions from people who would like to stay in the Netherlands after their cultural exchange. Such as; can I study in the Netherlands after my au pair year and how does it work with a partner visa? And what happens when you stay without a visa? We’ve collected and answered all these questions in this blog. Read on!

What options do I have to stay in the Netherlands?

Your au pair residence permit is valid for one year only and can’t be extended. If you want to stay in the Netherlands when the permit ends, you have to make an application for a new residence permit with a new purpose of stay. The IND will assess you to see if you meet the conditions.

Can I stay working as a Nanny after my au pair year?

If you are not an EU-citizen you can’t stay working as a nanny in the Netherlands after your au pair year. You may qualify for a residence permit for study purposes.

Is it possible to study in the Netherlands?

It’s not possible to extent your au pair residence permit after 1 year. But you can apply for a residence permit to study in the Netherlands. There are certain conditions that you and your educational institution have to meet:

  • You have been accepted by a university or university of applied sciences as a student to a full-time accredited day program. This university is a recognized sponsor and is listed in the Public Register of Recognized Sponsors.
  • You have an independent sufficient and sustainable income.
  • You obtain at least 50% of the required credits for each academic year.

How does it work with a partner visa?

When you have been in long-term exclusive relationship with a Dutch resident you can get a residency permit. Your partner must be registered as a Dutch citizen or have a valid residence permit. Your partner also needs to have sufficient means of a job to support you both. You also need a registered cohabitation contract or proof of being in a long-term exclusive relationship. You don’t need to be married to apply for this permit.

If you come from a European country can you just stay or what do you have to do?

EU-citizens don’t need a visa to visit, work or study in the Netherlands. You only need to register your stay with the IND if you are bringing a family member traveling on a non-EU passport.

EU-citizens staying longer then 3 months who are not working need to have health insurance coverage and proof that they have funds for them and family members to live on.

You need to have a valid passport or national travel ID. If you are staying for more than 4 months you need to register with the personal records database and get a Citizen Service Number (BSN-number). You need to do this within 5 days of your arrival in the Netherlands and register in the town where you will be living.

After 5 years residence in the Netherlands, EU-citizens can apply to stay in the Netherlands permanently.

What if you stay without a visa, what happens then?

If your residence permit expires and you haven’t applied for a new residence permit, you are illegally in the Netherlands. If you don’t leave voluntarily you may be forced to leave the country by the authorities.

The overstay can lead to ban from entering the Netherlands up to 5 years.

Can I come to the Netherlands as au pair when I am now 31 and will turn 32 while I am in the Netherlands?

I am afraid not! You cannot be an au pair in the Netherlands while older than 31.

What are the requirements for the au pair’s room?

The room must be a safe place for the au pair and must have a window that can open and have easy access to a bathroom. Internet access must be available to the au pair. Fresh bed linen and towels are a nice way to greet someone who has packed up their life for a year in a suitcase.
